Q: I’m interested in being a horse chiropractor and wondering what one of your courses would be best suited for that?
A: To become an effective, proficient chiropractor in treating horse ailments successfully, one will need to have a greater understanding of the issues and potential issues horses are having with regard to their health and athletic performance. We recommend that the student develops a working knowledge and reference for anatomy (Horse Care A), selection of equine athletes (Horse Care A), and how conformation (structure) of the horse affects performance (Horse Care A). The student will also have to handle horses safely (Horse Care A), and understand basic competitive aspects of business to operate her chiropractor business successfully (Horse Care A). We believe there is value in having a broad understanding of equine behavior – as the job entails one to deal with horses and their owners on a daily basis (Equine Behavior). Additional modules the student can consider to further benefit his/her study can include: Principles of Hoof Care & Shoeing – Horse Care B (how horses’ feet are trimmed and shod affect the way a horse moves and soundness); Exercise and Conditioning – Horse Care B (many of a chiropractor’s patients will be horses that are moving into training regimes or need rehabilitative conditioning); Principles of Equine Health Management – Horse Care C (chiropractic medicine is an aspect of the holistic approach to health – a general knowledge in basic horse health management and diseases is very important to be able to assess health status accurately); and Aspects of Managing a Horse Enterprise – Horse Care C (most equine chiropractors are owner/operators of their business – a sense of business operation is essential).
